The making of Ostara

Creating Ostara: The Process of Making a Straw Hat with a Jute Crown

When it comes to fashion accessories, a straw hat can add a touch of elegance and charm to any outfit. In this blog, I show you a closer look at the creation process behind Ostara, a stunning straw hat with a jute crown. This dusky pink beauty starts off adorned with pinky grey and gold ribbons, as well as delicate decorations such as flowers and feathers, making it a true statement piece.

The Inspiration Behind Ostara

Before diving into the intricate details of crafting Ostara, let's explore the inspiration behind this exquisite hat. Ostara draws its name from the Germanic goddess of spring and dawn, symbolising new beginnings and the blooming of nature. The choice of colours, including the dusky pink hue, represents femininity, grace, and sophistication.

Gathering Materials: Straw and Jute

The first step in creating Ostara was to gather the necessary materials. To make the hat's base. Straw not only provides a lightweight and breathable feel but also offers durability and flexibility. The jute crown, on the other hand, adds texture and uniqueness to the design. Jute, a natural fiber derived from plants, is known for its strength and eco-friendly properties.

The Hat-Making Process

1. Designing the Hat: I began by sketching the desired shape and style of Ostara. Taking into consideration a perfect balance between fashion and functionality.

2. Assembling the Hat: Once the straw brim has been prepared and the jute crown is moulded, set and complete the crown is then secured to the base, creating a harmonious blend of straw and jute.

3. Adding Embellishments: To elevate Ostara's beauty, delicate pinky grey and gold ribbons were carefully attached, complementing the dusky pink color of the hat. Additional decorations such as flowers and feathers are intricately placed, adding a touch of whimsy and romance.

Video Showcase: Witnessing the Artistry

To truly appreciate all that goes into creating Ostara, I created a video showcasing the entire hat-making process. This video offers a mesmerising glimpse into the world of hat-making.

Conclusion

Whether worn at a summer garden party or a day at the beach, Ostara adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to any ensemble. Witnessing the creation process through the video allows us to appreciate the craftsmanship and dedication that brings this beautiful hat to life.

Even more noteworthy is the fact that the chief quality controller, my mother, decided she wasn’t happy with the ribbon so deconstructed the whole piece. I have recently rebuilt Ostara’s with a dusky pink velvet feel ribbon and much more embellishment. This just shows how we often revisit, revitalise, remodel, revamp and simply redo pieces if they stay still long enough.
